Academic support for hospitalized children and adolescents

At the Integrated Pediatric, Adolescent, and Young Adult Oncology research and care center at Institut Curie, two specialist teachers help children and adolescents under treatment to continue their schooling. Provided by the French Education Nationale and attached to the School Center at Necker hospital, they are on-site at the Institut to provide continuity of academic programs for young patients in day hospital or hospitalized for the longer term. Some of them may stay in the department many times over the course of several months.
For each new patient treated in Pediatrics, the teachers liaise with the child’s school, with the family’s approval. The child or adolescent therefore remains a student in good standing.
For about six weeks, children who don’t live in the Paris region, and are receiving radiotherapy, tomotherapy, or proton therapy at Institut Curie (Paris or Orsay site), may take classes at the Institut and be accommodated temporarily at the “Maison des parents” during their treatment.

Tailored school support in the classroom, at the patient’s bedside or at home

On the sixth floor of the rue d’Ulm in Paris, the teaching team is charged with teaching in the classroom or at the patient’s bedside, according to the French national curriculum. If necessary, special teaching adjustments are made to teach students with special needs. From kindergarten through middle school, school activities are adapted according to each level, and can even be offered “à la carte.” Collective, theme-based workshops (arts & crafts, music, science, etc.) are also held.
For patients aged 15 to 25, hospitalized on the second floor, the volunteer teachers of the “hospital school” take over. The adolescents are also able to take the national exams (brevet des collèges et baccalauréat) at Institut Curie, which becomes an examination center. A request must be made to the management of the school center at Necker.
If the school absence is prolonged, teaching assistance at home is offered to support the child, coordinated by the teaching team at Institut Curie. Depending on the medical opinion, requests to the SAPAD and the APAD (organizations providing school support in the home) are then sent to the academic departments concerned.
