Institut Curie's three missions

Institut Curie's missions
Display summary

Research, care, knowledge transfer: to maintain its high level of excellence in scientific research and the fight against cancer, Institut Curie's statutory missions are built around these three interrelated pillars.
Comprising an internationally renowned Research Center and a state-of-the-art Hospital Group, Institut Curie is France's leading cancer center, treating all cancers, including the rarest.

It brings together 3,800 doctors, caregivers and researchers on its 3 sites: Paris, Saint-Cloud and Orsay.

Institut Curie is a foundation with a recognized public interest status (FRUP) authorized to receive donations and bequests. Thanks to the support of its donors, Institut Curie is able to accelerate discoveries and thus improve treatments and the quality of life of its patients.

RESEARCH

The Institut Curie Research Center aims to understand the complex mechanisms that make living organisms function. Basic research which is developed here enables the deployment of high-performance translational research,
an invaluable source of innovation and a response to the scientific, technological and medical challenges posed by cancer.

The scientific advances facilitated by translational research can affect anything from the normal or cancerous cell to the whole organism, opening the way to new knowledge that in turn provides the innovative therapeutic solutions that are essential to the fight against cancer.

The Research Center brings together the best scientists in 86 multidisciplinary teams and provides them with 19 cutting-edge technological platforms.
It creates an environment conducive to interdisciplinarity, mutual inspiration, collaboration with clinicians and openness to partnerships, in France and around the world.

CARE

The Institut Curie Hospital Group treats a wide variety of cancers: breast cancer, pediatric cancer, cancer of the respiratory system, gynecological, digestive, and cancers of the male reproductive system, blood and bone marrow, ENT (ear, nose and throat), skin, urinary tract, thyroid, central nervous system, eye tumors and sarcomas.

It takes an always-interdisciplinary approach to treatment, lending the best skills and the most efficient techniques to holistic, continuous care for all patients, at all stages of the disease, with a constant concern for their quality of life.

Because of its strengths in clinical research, Institut Curie promotes a large number of clinical trials and includes its patients in those trials whenever possible. Since it is globally renowned for its expertise, Institut Curie hosts several hundred international patients annually, and strives to meet the needs of those patients who do not have access to the treatments they need in their country.

Preservation and transfer of knowledge

Teaching and training future doctors, health professionals, and researchers is an Institut Curie priority.
Every year, around 500 PhD students, residents, Master’s students, and trainee nurses come from all five continents to take courses at Institut Curie. By participating in the outreach and dissemination of knowledge, Institut Curie contributes to improving the patient care all over the world and to advancing our understanding of living organisms.
Through the Musée Curie, Institut Curie also guarantees the preservation and study of the Curie family's scientific legacy. Open to the public, the Musée Curie ensures that this legacy is passed on to younger generations.

Allies in support of Institut Curie's three missions

Institut Curie relies on a network of institutional and academic partnerships to reinforce its mission impact:

  • 17 agreements signed with regional hospital groups, to extend public access to quality care;
  • collaborations in India, the United States and Israel, with the most advanced institutes in the field of oncology research;
  • international university cooperation for young researchers.

Another key player is the general public, whose generosity has enabled us to raise more than 76 million euros in 2023 to carry out these three missions. Every year, Institut Curie can count on more than 239,000 donors and 70 corporate sponsors.
