Description

How cells size their organelles is often explained through limiting components or cell-surface cues. In this talk I will argue that the bulk physical state of the cytoplasm is a (regulated) cellular parameter that links cell state to organelle size. I will illustrate this with two cases: the nucleus, whose density is set relative to the cytoplasm by an osmotic pressure balance, and the mitotic spindle, whose architecture changes as the cytoplasm dilutes during differentiation.
