About the speaker

Prof. Shimon Sakaguchi is a Distinguished Honorary Professor at the Immunology Frontier Research Center (IFReC) at the University of Osaka, Japan.
He obtained his M.D. in 1976 and Ph.D. in 1982 from Kyoto University, Japan, where he trained as a pathologist and immunologist. He subsequently conducted postdoctoral research at Johns Hopkins University and Stanford University as a Lucille P. Markey Scholar before joining the Scripps Research Institute as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Immunology.

In 1991, he returned to Japan to lead the Department of Immunopathology at the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology. From 1998 to 2011, he served as a Professor at Kyoto University's Institute for Frontier Medical Sciences, where he was also Director from 2007 to 2011. In 2011, his laboratory moved to the University of Osaka.

Elected a Foreign Member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 2012, Prof. Sakaguchi has received numerous prestigious international distinctions, including the William B. Coley Award (2004), the Keio Medical Science Prize (2008), the Canada Gairdner International Award (2015), the Crafoord Prize (2017), the German Immunology Award (2019), the Paul Ehrlich and Ludwig Darmstaedter Prize (2020), the Robert Koch Prize (2020), the Debrecen Award for Molecular Medicine (2023), and the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

He received an honorary degree from the University of Birmingham, UK, in 2019, the Medal with Purple Ribbon from the Government of Japan in 2009, and the Order of Culture, the highest distinction for Japanese scholars in the humanities and natural sciences, from the Emperor of Japan in 2019.
