SIREDO, expert center in childhood and adolescent cancer
Institut Curie is one of the largest European centers for the management and research of childhood, adolescent and young adult cancers. Each year, more than 700 young cancer patients, including 380 new patients, are taken care of at the institute within its dedicated center - SIREDO (Care, Innovation & Research in Childhood, Adolescent & Young Adult Oncology).
This is the 1st center in France to integrate teams specialized in care and research on cancers affecting people under 25 years of age. By combining this high-level expertise from both a medical and scientific point of view, SIREDO is developing new therapeutic strategies to cure more and more children and reduce as much as possible the after-effects of the children treated, in order to preserve their future adult life.
Expert and specific management of pediatric cancers
The multidisciplinary teams of Institut Curie's SIREDO center take care of all solid tumors in children, adolescents, and young adults (0-25 years old), regardless of their location, as well as lymphomas, such as :
- Brain tumors in children
- Tumors of the central nervous system (neuroblastoma, etc.)
- Kidney tumors (nephroblastoma, etc.)
- Bone tumors (osteosarcomas, Ewing's sarcoma, etc.)
- Tumors of the eye (retinoblastoma, etc.)
- Soft tissue sarcomas
- Germ cell tumors
- Rhabdoid tumors
- Rare childhood tumors
Care adapted to the youngest patients
The SIREDO teams work closely with the healthcare structures of Institut Curie to adapt the treatment of young patients, which requires specificities related to their age: anesthesia, radiology, anatomopathology, radiotherapy, ophthalmology, medical oncology service, etc.
In particular, Institut Curie offers many pediatric radiotherapy techniques, sometimes under general anesthesia. In addition, the institute is one of the only establishments in France to have a proton therapy device, a high precision radiotherapy perfectly adapted to the treatment of certain pediatric cancers.
Institut Curie also collaborates on a daily basis with the surgical teams of the pediatric hospitals of the Public Assistance - Hospitals of Paris when necessary, and with the Île-de-France Network of Pediatric Hematology Oncology (RIFHOP) to ensure coordination with the local centers where certain treatments can be provided.
Thanks to their expertise on each type of pediatric tumors, the pediatricians at Institut Curie are very actively involved with national and European expert groups.
Adolescents and young adults
At Institut Curie, adolescents and young adults (AYA) are cared for within a dedicated unit, taking into account the medical and psycho-social specificities of young patients aged 15 to 24 inclusive.
Infants
Children under one year old (infants) also benefit from dedicated care to meet their specific needs and those of their family. This specific support aims to maintain a parent-child bond by facilitating the care of very young children, thanks to suitable equipment and spaces dedicated to these very young patients.
Today's children and adolescents are tomorrow's adults, and Institut Curie also offers long-term follow-up consultations for adults who have been treated for cancer in childhood.
Beyond care, comprehensive support
An essential complement to medical care, the SIREDO center of Institut Curie supports children and adolescents with cancer in their daily lives by offering:
- Adapted school monitoring, at the hospital, in conjunction with the school establishment detached from the national education system
- Psychological support
- Social support for families and young patients
- Leisure activities (plastic arts workshops “NOC association”, entertainment, games, etc.)
- Strong collaboration with family and patient associations
Located within a 5-minute walk from the hospital, the Irène-Joliot-Curie Parents' House accommodates the parents of children treated at Institut Curie. This friendly place, where you can relax and unwind, allows families to be listened to and supported in the face of psychological or material difficulties. It can also accommodate children who, accompanied by their parents, are undergoing outpatient treatment or a monitoring check-up.
A dynamic research to cure more and more children
Today, thanks to the progress made in recent decades, 8 out of 10 children are cured of their cancer, although at the cost of frequent after-effects.
In order to cure more and more children but also to reduce the after-effects of treatments to preserve the future lives of young patients, Institut Curie carries out numerous basic, translational, and clinical research projects.
By bringing together high-level specialists in pediatric oncology from both a medical and scientific point of view within the SIREDO center, the institute can offer its expertise as an efficient care-research continuum for the benefit of children and adolescents suffering from cancer. Institut Curie is thus recognized, in particular, as a center for early trial of new drugs (labeled CLIP2 pediatric), and is a world leader in pediatric molecular medicine.
