The primary activity of our SHARE team (Human and Social Sciences and Outcome Research)  is dedicated to research in supportive care in oncology. Our goal is to better understand the lived experience of cancer patients, their relatives, and healthcare professionals, in order to improve quality of life, communication, care ethics, and support throughout the disease trajectory. The team conducts clinical, qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods research, as well as implementation research. These studies focus on psychological distress, supportive care needs, the physician–patient relationship, and ethical issues in care, covering a wide range of medical situations from prevention to the palliative phase and end of life. The team also contributes to the evaluation of innovative psychosocial and organizational interventions..

Founded in 2021 at Institut Curie by two psycho-oncology researchers, Sylvie Dolbeault and Anne Brédart, SHARE aims to structure and promote research in the Human and Social Sciences in oncology within Institut Curie, while actively contributing to patient-centered translational research. As part of an interdisciplinary dynamic, the team brings together physicians, psychologists, public health researchers, and social scientists, and works closely with clinicians and patient partners, while also developing collaborations with national and international teams.

Health Democracy – Patient Partners

Health democracy encompasses a set of approaches aimed at involving citizens and patients in decisions concerning their health, healthcare organizations, and health policies—thus sharing decision-making power between professionals, institutions, and the public. Within the framework of the SIRIC 3 program, we collaborate with a "patient-partner" group involved at every stage of research projects, from study design and tool development to methodological choices, data analysis, and dissemination of findings. This approach strengthens health democracy, promotes the uptake of results by end users, and enhances the relevance of research for those directly concerned.

Human and Social Sciences (SHS) : Studies conducted in the field of HSS focus on the experiences of patients and their relatives, including psychological distress and adjustment, quality of life, and supportive care needs, communication with healthcare professionals, satisfaction with care, as well as care practices, decision-making processes, and the organization of healthcare. Both quantitative (observational and interventional) and qualitative studies are carried out to identify vulnerability factors affecting patients and/or their relatives, as well as inequalities in care provision. The interventions evaluated are often complex; they aim to improve the identification of and response to care needs, enhance the psychological outcomes of illness and treatments, and/or optimize specific care practices.

Outcome Research (OR) : This term refers to research on the impact of healthcare on patients’ real-life health and well-being, integrating both clinical data and patient experience, particularly through Patient-Reported Outcomes (PROs). Measures used in OR include Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMS; e.g., fatigue, pain), Patient-Reported Experience Measures (PREMS; e.g., satisfaction with care) as well as clinical indicators (e.g., toxicity, survival) and economic indicators (e.g., costs, QALYs).
