Prostate cancer research
New research avenues are primarily aimed at cancer detection. Several projects are currently underway, aimed at refining cancer cell detection. The aim of these programs is twofold: to improve accuracy and to be less invasive than current protocols.
New approaches to treatment are being explored by Institut Curie teams. These include cases where tumor cells still manage to synthesize testosterone to promote their proliferation, for example by capturing substances such as cholesterol or progesterone. The aim is to develop inhibitors to prevent tumor cell progression.
Another avenue of research: unlike certain urogenital cancers, high-risk prostate cancers can be treated with hormone therapy combined with stereotactic radiotherapy (a very precise external technique). In certain rare cases, hormone therapy may be combined with chemotherapy. Docetaxel is the most conventional chemotherapy. More recently, cabazitaxel has enabled medical teams to propose an alternative, sometimes more effective. Teams are currently testing and comparing the tolerability of these two treatments for patients.
