Hematological cancer treatments
Hematology treatments can include oral medications, blood transfusions, targeted therapies, immunotherapy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and, in some cases, stem cell transplants or modified cell therapy. Each of these treatments is available at Institut Curie. The management and prognosis of these different haemopathies vary widely. Thanks to clinical research, immense therapeutic progress has been made in recent years, with the development of new treatments that prolong survival and improve patients' quality of life.Â
Institut Curie's haematology department includes a consultation, day hospital, traditional hospitalization and intensive care structure with individual rooms. All stages of care are possible at the Institut, from diagnosis and pre-therapy assessment to treatment. The team is made up of eight doctors, each with a specific area of specialization, enabling rich, collegial discussion at multidisciplinary consultation meetings. The paramedical team is made up of a health executive, a senior nurse, a team of state-qualified nurses and caregivers. Depending on the pathology, one nurse looks after four to five patients.
Patients are generally referred to the clinic on the basis of a referral from their general practitioner, and are rapidly taken on. Each patient is followed up by a referral hematologist at key stages in his or her care. Medical support during hospitalization is provided as a team by the department's various doctors.Â
Once a diagnosis has been made, the patient's course of treatment is announced at a multidisciplinary consultation meeting with the referring physician, followed by a consultation with a dedicated nurse.
