Research into Eye tumors
Cancers of the eye are very rare tumors. They therefore require considerable expertise. Institut Curie is at the forefront of research into eye cancers, as part of the SIREDO (Soin, Innovation, Recherche en Oncologie de l'Enfant, de l’adolescent et de l'adulte jeune) center for retinoblastoma. Institut Curie also has a very active translational research group on melanoma, which has led to a better understanding of this disease.
More generally, research into eye cancers requires close collaboration between ophthalmologists, medical oncologists, anatomopathologists who examine biopsies, and specialized radiotherapists... National reference networks have therefore been set up and accredited by the Institut National du Cancer. These networks are run by national reference centers, such as Institut Curie for retinoblastomas, which also coordinates the national reference network for choroidal melanomas (Mélachonat network) and that for intraocular and cerebral lymphomas (LOC network) in collaboration with CHU Pitié-Salpêtrière (AP-HP, Paris).
Research into eye cancers generally concerns:
• the causes and cells of origin
• the fight against metastatic relapse
• development of circulating biomarkers
• development of new targeted treatments...
